Description
The use of colour on this bowl is derived from ‘Sansai’, a type of decoration that was applied to ancient Chinese pottery between the 7th and 10th centuries. Green, brown and white were traditionally used for this style, but here the Japanese artist Shingo Oka has chosen black pigment from Karatsu, where he lives, and blue ‘Gosu’ pigment. An embossed pattern inspired by old Vietnamese bowls covers the interior for a textural flourish.

AGOBAY Showroom ZurichThe intricate markings and patterns on this bowl make it an intriguing piece, either as a purely decorative object or more functionally as a serving vessel. With a diameter of 16cm and height of 5.5cm, it is small to medium in size and has a somewhat solid feel to it. While the bowl is based on an ancient mode of decoration, Shingo Oka believes “there’s nothing more boring than settling on a particular style”, and prefers to add his own flair to his creations.

Taking care of your two-toned bowl with engraving includes avoiding stacking it with or storing it against other objects to prevent scratches or cracks. Wipe it with a soft cloth to dust it.
Rinse it with water using a soft dish cloth after each use. After cleaning it, let it air dry fully before you store it again. Do not wash it with any cleaning agents and avoid using abrasive sponges, dishwashers or drying machines.
The bowl must not be directly exposed to temperature shocks – whether from a flame, conventional oven, microwave, induction cooktop, freezer, refrigerator or other source of heat or cold. If you notice cracks, chips or deep scrapes, please stop using it, as these can cause the item to break at any time.
